Pietermaritzburg murder suspect killed in alleged mob justice attack

A man who is alleged to have murdered a young boy last week was stoned to death, allegedly by community members.

The man suspected of luring and murdering seven-year-old Lenathi Sfundo Mkhize in the Ezinketheni informal settlement near Copesville in Pietermaritzburg over the weekend was attacked and killed, allegedly by community members, late last night.

The Witness confirmed the mob justice incident with Community Policing Forum chairperson Sham Govender and Umsilinga Primary School’s governing body chairperson Mthandeni Zikhali.

The suspect, who was regarded as a family friend by Mkhize’s father William Rutambo, is alleged to have lured the boy into his rented shack and killed him on Thursday.

Mkhize, a grade 2 pupil at Umsilinga Primary School near Copesville, was found dead in the suspect’s rented shack lying face down with his hands and feet tied with a jacket. He had a stab wound in the left shoulder and was also strangled.

Zikhali says residents heard that the suspect had arrived at his shack on Sunday night. Community members then allegedly apprehended him and, when he tried to escape, they threw stones at him.
