Fires rage in various parts of the country

Strong winds and dry conditions have seen numerous fires erupt across parts of the country over the past days, with fire warnings being issued in numerous provinces.

Dense smoke is affecting visibility on the N4 eastbound in Middelburg and motorists are advised to drive with caution.

As reported by the Middelburg Observer, a traffic alert has been issued for thick smoke on the N4 as a veld fire rages next to the highway. Dense smoke is affecting visibility in both lanes, just after the Belfast off-ramp, when travelling towards Mbombela.

Just after 13:00 today, Middelburg Observer reported that the stretch of N4 between the Berg en Dal monument and the Belfast off-ramp is temporarily closed due to the smoke and an active accident scene. Motorists are advised to make use of alternative routes.

Fires and warnings for KZN

A fire warning has also been issued for across KZN, amid higher temperatures and strong winds.

According to an article published by the Zululand Observer, KZN disaster management teams are on high alert following a forecast of strong and damaging wind in parts of the province today.

Residents in the Zululand, King Cetshwayo, Ugu, uMgungundlovu, uThukela, Amajuba and iLembe districts are urged to exercise extreme caution and prepare for bad weather conditions.

The South African Weather Service has forecast wind speeds of up to 70km/h, with gusts exceeding 80km/h.

The KZN Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs says ‘strong winds, coupled with high temperatures, have created ideal conditions for runaway fires’.

“Residents are warned about the dangers posed by these fires and are urged to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves and their properties,” said the department.

According to an article published by The Witness, runaway fires yesterday engulfed Pietermaritzburg in a haze of smoke, leaving residents on high alert as emergency services responded.

Safety measures

Zululand Observer published the following safety measures for strong winds:

  • Secure any loose items around homes and properties to prevent them from being picked up by the wind.
  • Remain indoors whenever possible to avoid the risk of injury from flying debris and to stay safe from the high winds.
  • Residents should avoid any non-essential travel to reduce the risk of accidents on the roads.

Preventative measures for fires

  • Avoid starting any open fires, as they can quickly spread out of control.
  • If you spot a fire, report it immediately to the local fire department or emergency services.
  • If you live in a rural area, consider creating firebreaks around your property to help prevent the spread of fires.
