Missing Sodwana Bay skipper: Accused to appear in court

A missing skipper’s family still does not know what happened to him more than two months after his burnt-out boat was found.

Ferdie Visser, the man arrested in connection with the disappearance of Sodwana Bay skipper John ‘Matambu’ Dercksen, is set to make another court appearance today.

He is due to appear in the Manguzi Magistrate’s Court on the original charges of fraud and theft, and an added charge of murder.

Dercksen’s family and friends will fill the court as proceedings get underway.

He went missing after taking Visser on a charter boat trip on Saturday, March 17.

After messaging his partner at about 11:30 that day, he has not been seen or heard from since.

A massive manhunt involving the Hawks and Interpol was launched after word got out that Visser, the man who chartered the vessel Magnum Too, had made his way across the border into Mozambique.

He was apprehended by Mozambican authorities a week after the disappearance, was extradited to South Africa and has been in custody since.
