[Video] Liezel de Jager murder: Was millions in insurance cover the motivation?
The murder charge of Werner de Jager, husband of slain Reverend Liezel, is classified as Schedule 6 because of its seriousness.
Werner de Jager appeared in the Amanzimtoti Magistrate’s Court today where he was given a chance to apply for bail.
According to the charge sheet that the South Coast Sun has seen, the state has classified De Jager’s charge as Schedule 6 because of its seriousness. The charge sheet also states that it is seeking a life imprisonment sentence.
De Jager is accused of killing his wife, Reverend Liezel de Jager, on October 13, 2021, by strangulation. According to the charge sheet, the murder was premeditated and was motivated by insurance policies totalling R3.29m that would pay out in the event of Liezel’s death.
“On the same day of the death of [Liezel], the applicant made an inquiry about the benefits due to him being under the deceased’s will,” reads the charge sheet.
The state opposed bail and the case was postponed to January 25.
