Man nabbed in connection with R440k e-bike theft in Pretoria
A recently robbed shop owner became suspicious when a customer wanted to purchase accessories for electric bikes.
Bull Security in collaboration with NIU Crime Intelligence and the police arrested a man on suspicion of the theft of electric bikes (e-bikes) valued at R440 000 in Erasmuskloof, Pretoria.
According to Bull Security, the man is believed to be a member of a bicycle syndicate.
Bull Security said in a statement that last Friday morning, it received information about a person wanting to purchase accessories for an e-bike from the bike shop in Wolwespruit, Erasmuskloof.
“The suspicious owner, who had earlier been a victim of a business robbery, immediately alerted the police.”
Bull Security responded swiftly.
“The suspect was arrested on the scene, and led the units to an address in Serengeti Estate, where the e-bikes were recovered.”
The property was confirmed to belong to the man and he could not give a satisfactory explanation of where he got the bikes from, says Bull Security.
“Police seized the e-bikes and handed them back to the owner who identified them as his.”
Cyclists are urged to take extra precautions as it is feared that criminals target e-bikes.
Cyclist Freddy Strydom (57) was recently left fighting for his life after he was brutally stabbed in the back by criminals who stole his e-bike.
Strydom was cycling with a group of 12 others when he was attacked between the R21 and M18.
On November 11, another cyclist was attacked on Main Road in Irene, while crossing the river.
