Elderly man shot as Brakpan North ATM bombers flee

The 69-year-old man was asleep in his car, which was parked near the filling station where the robbery occurred.

A manhunt is underway for a gang of eight men responsible for the bombing of an ATM at the Engen Garage at the Sherwood Shopping Centre in Brakpan North early this morning.

A 69-year-old man, who had been asleep in his car nearby, sustained multiple injuries when he was shot by the fleeing robbers.

According to information received, police were notified of the bombing at around 01:30. Employees told the responding officer five men entered the shop on the premises and demanded money.

While they helped themselves to cash and coins from the tills, three others rigged the ATM with explosives.

The robbers were armed with handguns and rifles. The ATM exploded, causing extensive damage, and also reportedly injured one of the robbers.

They took cash from the ATM and fled the scene on foot, opening fire on the man in the car. He sustained injuries to his chest, hip and legs, and was taken to hospital.

Twelve empty cartridges were found on the scene.

The shooting incident follows three days after 20-year-old Megan Griesel was killed after she drove past a robbery in Lydenburg, Mpumalanga. The robbers opened fire on her vehicle.
