Newcomer Jaecoo makes a splash in South Africa’s top 30 vehicles

South Africa's automotive market witnessed a surprising surge from a new player Jaecoo.

The recently established urban off-road SUV brand, Jaecoo, made a remarkable debut, rocketing into the top 30 best-selling car brands in April 2024. This achievement is even more impressive considering their first model, the J7, only launched halfway through the month.

Despite a limited sales window (from April 13 onwards), the J7 garnered enough sales to secure Jaecoo a phenomenal 28th place out of 54 automotive brands in South Africa’s new vehicle market.

This impressive performance, coupled with sister brand Omoda’s success in its first year, propelled the Chery Group to its highest monthly sales total ever (2 009 units). This accomplishment translated to a record 6th place on the overall manufacturer standings and a commendable 4th position in the passenger vehicle segment.

“The J7’s arrival has generated significant excitement among South African drivers,” said Tony Liu, executive deputy general manager for Chery/Omoda & Jaecoo South Africa. “This enthusiasm extends to the entire Jaecoo brand, which embodies the philosophy of ‘From Classic, Beyond Classic.’ The J7 itself contributed a remarkable 7.4% to Chery’s record sales total for the month.”

The J7 line-up boasts three variants, with prices starting from a competitive R549 900. The range-topping Inferno derivative features all-wheel drive and seven driving modes, providing exceptional versatility for South African drivers. This initial success paves the way for further expansion, with additional Jaecoo models expected to arrive in the coming months.

Customers can look forward to the upcoming J8 Phev, with the J6 also slated for a local launch. More details on these exciting new models will be revealed closer to their arrival dates.
