The 2024 Motor Mech Show was held on Saturday June 15 at Port Rex Technical High School and saw eight talented learners compete in a series of tests designed to showcase their mechanical skills and knowledge. The competition was organised by the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA), a division of the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI).
Young talent takes top honours
Jonathan du Toit from Daniel Pienaar emerged victorious, setting a new benchmark for future competitors. Port Rex learners secured the remaining podium places, with Tjaart van der Walt (second), Ashley Tom (third) and Liqhawe Skepu (fourth) impressing the judges.
Celebrating enthusiasm and potential
Teresa Spenser-Higgs, MIWA Eastern Cape’s regional vice-chairperson and co-organiser of the event, praised all participants for their dedication and enthusiasm. “This competition is not just about technical skills; it’s about recognising the future leaders of the automotive industry,” she said.
Evolving challenges put skills to the test
Competition organiser, Cliffie Jacobs, introduced new elements this year, including Bosch diagnostics and ATE brakes to keep things fresh and assess the learners’ adaptability.
Diversity and determination shine through
Guest facilitator, Zikhona Seti, a qualified mechanic and lecturer, commended the learners’ professionalism and positive attitudes. “It was particularly inspiring to see the female competitors excel and Jonathan, who has a hearing disability, prove that a disability is not a barrier to success,” Seti said.
Inspiring the next generation
Spenser-Higgs emphasised the event’s focus on inspiring future generations. “We want to show young people the exciting opportunities available in the automotive industry,” she explained.
Industry leaders back the future
Brian Rengasamy, business development executive at Leopard Idemitsu, a major sponsor, highlighted the importance of nurturing young talent. “These competitions are crucial for developing a skilled and innovative workforce for the future,” he said.
Collaboration makes it happen
The event’s success was a testament to teamwork, with sponsors like the Motor Industry Staff Association, Bosch, Ronnies Motors, ATE, HP Marketing, and McDonald’s playing a vital role. Peter van Mosseveld, RMI regional manager, commended everyone involved, including exhibitors, judges and the Port Rex Technical High School team.
