Ford South Africa is celebrating a momentous achievement – the millionth Ranger has rolled off the Silverton production line in Pretoria. This milestone marks 24 years of the Ranger’s production in SA, solidifying its place as a cornerstone of the local automotive industry.
Three generations of success
The Ranger’s story began in 2000 with the first generation, which saw over 100 000 units produced. The second generation, launched in 2011, was a game-changer, introducing advanced features and propelling the Ranger to top-selling status. It secured the prestigious International Pickup Award three times and dominated local awards like CAR Magazine’s Best Double-cab Bakkie for a record 11 years.
Investing in the future
Ford’s commitment to SA is evident in its extensive investments. The Silverton plant underwent a major expansion to reach a production capacity of 200 000 vehicles per year, the highest in the country. This included building an on-site stamping plant, a chassis plant and a modernised assembly line.
Local impact
Ford’s Ranger production directly employs over 5 200 people and supports around 60 000 jobs in the total value chain. The Tshwane Automotive Special Economic Zone, developed in partnership with the government, houses 11 component suppliers specifically for the Ranger assembly line.
Award-winning excellence
The Ranger’s success is further demonstrated by its impressive trophy cabinet. It recently secured the 2023 South African Car of the Year title, becoming the first pickup to do so. The latest generation also claimed the International Pickup Award last year.
