The 2024 DJ Rally revs up

Classic motorcycles roar as the 2024 iTOO DJ Rally gears up for an exhilarating ride from Durban to Johannesburg on March 15 and 16.

Eighty vintage motorcycles are set to rumble in the 2024 iTOO DJ Rally, reviving the spirit of historic road races between Durban and Johannesburg. To qualify, bikes must have been manufactured before 1937, capturing the essence of early 20th-century racing.

This year’s rally welcomes ten newcomers, ensuring the rally’s vitality, while a record-breaking five women riders join the ranks. Among them, 28-year-old Sasha Corlett debuts on a 1936 500cc BSA, while 87-year-old Cliff le Roux rides a 1936 500cc AJS.

The Corlett family boasts a rich DJ Rally legacy, with Sasha’s grandfather, George, clinching victory in 1981, and her father, Mark, claiming the title in 1986 and 1988. Notably, both George and his wife, Valerie, will participate alongside Sasha. George rides a 1928 500cc Norton, Valerie a 1928 500cc BSA, and Sasha follows on number 43, Valerie on 44, and George on 45.

The field includes the venerable 1918 1 000cc Indian Power Plus, piloted by Yuvi Jasti, embodying the rally’s timeless appeal.

In its 52nd edition, the rally demands precision as riders strive to maintain set average speeds. The journey commences at 06:00 on March 15 from Hillcrest Corner shopping centre in Durban, culminating the following afternoon at Benoni Northerns Club. The coveted prize, the silver Schlesinger Vase, awaits the victor, alongside a miniature trophy as a cherished memento.

Previous champions, including George Jnr Corlett, Gavin Walton, Martin Davis, and Mike Ward, aim to add another triumph to their accolades, intensifying the competition.

Organised by a consortium of local motorcycle clubs under the Vintage and Veteran Club of South Africa, the rally welcomes Tom Linley as the clerk of the course, continuing the tradition of passion for classic motorcycles.
