Liza du Plessis (grade 12) from Hoërskool Eldoraigne in Centurion had the opportunity of a lifetime when she was asked to star in a local stage production, Porselein.

The production was staged for the first time in March with Carla Belmonte in the sub-lead role.

Belmonte recently got a job offer from London in the and was replaced with Liza.

An excited Du Plessis said she always wanted to work in Theatre.

“This is such a great opportunity for me and a good platform to show my talent.”

Apart from roles in school plays Du Plessis has also been an extra in the local South African movie, Fanie Fourie’s Lobola and featured in a corporate company’s marketing video.

She said Porselein will be a huge challenge for her because her role consists out of five characters, each with their own personality.

Director Quintin Wils said he was happy to work with the talented Du Plessis.

“I’ve seen her in a couple of school plays and she is a brilliant performer,” Wils said.

Porselein follows the lives of a modern gay couple and how they deal with the topic of domestic violence in an idealised South Africa where there is no discrimination of any kind.

The production also takes a look at the lives of an abuser and abused during domestic violence and flashes back to reasons for certain choices they had made in their lives.

Wils said the production received excellent reviews during its first run in March at the South African State Theatre and was described as “a masterpiece”.

“It is by far the most exhilarating show that I have ever directed, but it is also by far the most thought-provoking production. It makes you evaluate your own thoughts and idea’s around what domestic violence actually may be.”

Back by popular demand, Porselein will be performed from 28 September to 8 October 2016 at the South African State Theatre’s Arena Theatre.
