A21 walks against human trafficking

“There are 600 walks happening worldwide, including Pretoria, Kempton Park and Cape Town”.

Pretorians gathered at the Glen High school on Saturday to support A21’s walk against human trafficking.

Atleast 350 people came through to show their support,both the young and the young at heart took a stand against a very serious problem not only affecting Pretoria but the world as a whole.

Annerie van Niekerk, co-host for A21 said the NGO wanted to raise awareness about human trafficking.

“It’s everywhere, its unseen and its happening right under our noses. We need to bring an end to it as it is affects us too,” said van Niekerk.

Nicole van Rensburg, who is a volunteer for A21 said the campaign was also to raise awareness about child labour and slavery.

“We are walking for 21 million people who are victims of modern day slavery. Members of the community can contact our hotline 0800 222 777 to report suspicious activities and to get more information on what we do,” said van Rensburg.

An attendee at the walk said she wanted to support the walk as human trafficking was problematic in Pretoria especially in the Pretoria CBD, Arcadia and Sunnyside.

“I have seen so many women who come to Pretoria, some of them when I speak to them tell me that they came here to work, but one can see that they have now been forced into prostitution with no way out,” said the attendee.

Supporters of the walk walked from the Glen Highschool to Jan Masilela into Atterbury  then through Menlyn Maine and back to the Glen High school.

Supporters were wearing all black clothing, some were holding banners and most of them had yellow scarves over their mouths to show their solidarity to victims of human trafficking.
