Spoons, spices, pots and pans will become weapons of choice later this month.
They will be used by young culinary wizards in the east in this year’s cookout at the SPAR Battle of the Chefs.
The Pretoria High School for Girls will host the event on 27 August.
Organiser Karen Harris said this year’s fair would be packed with suspense and a variety of international cuisine.
“This year, the Pretoria Girls High (PHSG) head Girl, Gift Baloyi, will be taking on the headboy of Pretoria Boys High (PBHS) Mathew Glover, in a cook-off,” Harris said.
“Baloyi will team up with PHSG deputy headmistress Danica Stoffberg, while Glover would be supported by PBHS deputy headmaster John Illsley.”
They would receive a surprise goody bag of ingredients and a wild card draw of an additional “weird and wonderful” ingredient.
The teams of teachers and pupils from both schools would take each other on in a duel of culinary skills.
The first round of cooking would kick off at 08:30.
In the second round, starting at 10:30, parents would team up with their PHS pupils.
Harris said the third round of cook-offs would see PHSG pupils and their friends, siblings and fellow PBHS learners compete at 12:30.
She said the challenge would be to conjure up two creative dishes, with limited utensils against the clock.
“Top chefs from Prue Leith Chefs Academy, Steyns’ Cullinary School and Kelkiewyn Food and Wine, along with a senior lecturer from the University of Pretoria will judge the gastronomical challenge,” she said.
“Terrific prizes from these culinary schools as well as loads of vouchers from Pretoria’s top restaurants will be up for grabs.”
The fair would host a delicious range of international food stalls boasting mouth-watering flavours from across the globe.
These included Lebanese schwarmas, Indian curries, Greek souvlaki, African Ginger Beer and vetkoek.
The event would also feature book stalls with thousands of second-hand books on offer at
unbelievable prices.
Added attractions included a craft market with up-market goodies at down-market prices, an auction, a fashion show by the PHSG girls, a plant sale, fresh produce and entertainment by a DJ.
