Riders take a final bow

Legendary musicians play their final show for 2014.

The Riders From The Storm played their final show for 2014 on Wednesday evening at the Atterbury Theatre.

The six piece group comprises permanent members Mel Botes, Piet Botha, Nathan Smith and Robin Auld. The other two slots are filled by either rotating members Albert Frost and Valiant Swart or the duo Marcato.

The group played a mix of their own original songs and hits like The Doors. Each artist was given the opportunity to play some original songs, showcasing their own skills.

Newcomers Marcato blossomed under the guidance of the wiser and more experienced members of the group.

Speaking to Mel Botes after the show, he reveals what lies in store for him and for the band.

“The Riders project originally started out as a fixed group, but not all the artists can make it to every show, that is why we have the guys from Marcato fill in. They really work well within the Riders setup.”

He said though they may have had their final show of the year, there were big plans for the future.

“The next Riders show will be in March next year. During the course of next year, we will also record the first Riders album, with the original setup with Valiant Swart and Albert Frost.”

For now, Botes’ focus is on preparing his new studio.

“I recently bought a house down by the coast, and I am going to convert part of it into a new studio that I will use to record a new solo album I am working on.”

Botes’ latest release, an Afrikaans album Dans in die weerlig has fared well on the local charts.
