The Honda BR-V steps up to a bigger league

The BR-V joins the Honda stable of other Vs, and takes its place among them proudly.

The second-generation Honda BR-V does not just look more SUV-like, it offers more space, improved technology and a totally improved design.

Honda did not lose its magic seat and the engines are still normally aspirated. These features have always been, in my opinion, the mainstay of Honda products.

What is interesting, though, is that you now have a number of Vs in the Honda stable. There is the baby, the WR-V, then the BR-V, the HR-V and lastly the CR-V. It is like having four children a year apart!

I was recently invited to drive the base model BR-V Trend for a short introductory drive.

Exterior

The front end is squarish and bold with sharp lines, a large grille and elongated light clusters that present a wide and masculine face. Yes, it is not an MPV anymore, it is indeed a SUV. I love the lower part of the bumper design that includes an air dam and accentuates the position of the number plate.

The design lines on the bonnet create that “big car” impression and gives one a wide and full bonnet to look at and work with once seated inside the car. The shoulder line runs from the headlights right along the side and links with the tailgate and rear light clusters. Roof rails and alloy wheels are part of the deal. The Trend and Comfort derivatives are fitted with 16″ rubber and the top-end model, the Elegance, boasts 17″ wheels.

The rear end is beautiful, but something was amiss and I could not put my finger on it – yet! Perhaps it is too clutter-free – but then, I love simplicity.

Interior

It is typically Honda – conservative, uncluttered and dark, with silver/aluminum inlays and highlights. All the derivatives, except the Elegance, feature fabric upholstery with leather-like trim across the dash and door panels and more.

I was impressed with the available interior space. This generation BR-V is 35mm longer and 45mm wider than its predecessor. Yes, I know, it does not sound like a lot, but design engineering has become amazingly capable of turning seemingly small spaces into large accommodation. This also applies to vehicle design.

There is ample legroom, front and rear, and even a tad more between the second row seats and the two seats way back in the rear, which really are suitable for kids only. It is a seven-seater, after all, but then, with the last two seats up, luggage space is not much bigger than in a small hatch.

The seat configuration does, however, allow for a 60/40 or 50/50 split or both second and third row seats down, which then offers a wonderfully large and open space for luggage, adventure equipment or a playpen for pets.

For the Google generation, especially if still of the non-licensed age, Honda has installed extra power outlets to insure that electronic equipment stay charged. For the driver, there is a 4.2″ TFT display installed on the dashboard and a 7″ touchscreen that allows for access to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Performance and road behaviour

All derivatives are fitted with a 1.5L DOHC i-VTEC engine delivering 89kW and 145Nm. The Trend, which I drove, comes with a six-speed manual and short shift gearbox. The Comfort and Elegance models offer a six-speed manual or CVT gearbox options.

Honda engines are high-revving, tough and durable, and although the performance are not earth-shattering in the least, it is adequate for the intention the BR-V has been designed. I do suspect, though, that with a full load, you will spend more time in fourth and fifth gear than you would like.

The suspension is firm but absorbing and comfortable. Safety features are extensive and model-dependent, and can include collision mitigation, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance and so forth. In the front, dual airbags and side air bags are standard across the range.

Pricing starts at R379 900 and includes a five-year/200 000km warranty.

Conclusion

Honda owners are seldom disappointed. These cars are durable and offer truly hassle-free motoring. This new BR-V is ideal for small active families, retired and travelling elders and even the active and adventurous individual comfortable with a sedate driving performance. Its styling is modern and it will age well.
