DJ optimistic to see female deejays recognised

She has been deejaying for more than a decade.

Female deejay Deneo “Dj DeOne” Majoro, who lives in Villa Liza, is optimistic about changing the perception that deejaying is only for men.

She explained that she had a hard time being accepted by the music fanatics when she first stood at the turntable.

“I started deejaying professionally in 2006 and during that time I was also trying to sharpen my skills. I love deejaying and I was not discouraged by the fact that I was doubted by a lot of people, because of my sex.

“My deejaying skills improved exceptionally because of the late DJ Sweedo. He took his precious time to train me and I would like to thank him for that. I mastered mixing tracks under his leadership.

“From 2007 up until now, I have been booked in local clubs and those in other provinces. My career as a DJ changed my life and it is fruitful.

“In 2014 I established a movement for female deejays. It only lasted for two years. I empowered female deejays. All the deejays that were part of the movement received salaries.

“I also ventured into the event organising fraternity. I organised events for Phumuza Mapiko and Emaglazen. After that short stint in marketing, I met Devan Paidiachy and Vusimuzi Buthelezi.

“We are now co-owners of a music company, clothing line and De and De Dj Academy of Music and Production.
“We established the academy because we don’t want all the new female deejays to face the challenges I faced. I was offered a booking in an event in exchange for sex and I rejected those offers and want them to do the same.

“Our objective with the academy is to empower women to be deejays and those who are already deejays.
“Any person who wants to join the De and De DJ Academy of Music and Production can email me at dddacademy@gmail.com or communicate with me on Facebook which is Deneo ‘DJ DeOne’ Majoro.”

Paidiachy said they will be hosting a deejaying competition soon and 10 deejaying trainees will be selected from the competition and will be trained on how to deejay by Dj DeOne.

“The academy is in the process of registering with MICTSETA and all the learners who will be trained how to deejay will receive the deejaying SETA certificates,” said Paidachy.
