Bands battle it out for a smashing recording deal

Fantastic, established bands and newby-bands all came together at Parkrand Primary School on Saturday, September 6, to kick-start the battle of the bands.

The competition was intended to seek out those with the talent to make you gasp with excitement as they play original and cover tunes. Genre of music included rock and folk.

In the end, after three preliminary rounds held during August, the cream of the crop was given the centre stage to put on a show of note.

The finals featured five bands, playing a three-song set each, with some performers travelling from as far as Pretoria.

Lonehill Estate opened the day with a full set of songs, getting everyone revved up for fabulous sounds about to embrace their senses.

Judges included Nathan Ro (Lonehill Estate frontman), Johnny Birin (owner of JB Studios), Sam Walker (Music Mate), Leandi Cameron (assistant editor from the Boksburg Advertiser), Brian Kotzen (teacher from Parkrand Primary School) and singer-songwriter Lilly Million.

Not Bob and Friend, a pair from Pretoria, clinched the title.

They were awarded with the competition’s grand prize – a two-song recording (a fully-produced hit and the follow-up single) that will be recorded at JB Studios.

Boksburg-based rock band called Fever Dogs, came second. They get a one-song recording deal.

Other competitors in the finals were Part Time Pirates, Order in Chaos and Perfection is X.

The event drew hundreds of music lovers from across Boksburg, with a host of fantastic playthings, food and stalls to keep everyone entertained.
