Body of suspectedly murdered man recovered from river near Mataffin

The Ehlanzeni Police Diving Unit recovered the body of a man, whose arms and legs were bound, from the Crocodile River near Mataffin.

The body of a man was found floating in the Crocodile River near Mataffin earlier this evening, December 4. His arms and legs had been bound and a plastic bag was placed over his head.

The Ehlanzeni Police Diving Unit recovered the body, which had become stuck on some sticks and reeds in the river. The unit’s Captain Pottie Potgieter said they estimate the body had been in the river for about 10 days before it was found.

Emer-G-Med’s Martin Jeffrey said he was alerted to the discovery at about 17:00 by a member of Nelspruit Concerned Citizens, and the other relevant authorities were immediately alerted.

He said the body showed signs of severe decomposition. The scene was handed over to the Nelspruit police just after 19:00 for investigation. The man’s age and identity is unknown at this stage.

A provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, said the investigation is ongoing and that he would comment once he had gathered more information on the matter.
