Medical conditions you never thought your child could get

From arthritis to thrush, we countdown medical conditions you thought were only reserved for adults but can also strike children.

Keeping your child healthy is a parent’s big priority. But, as your child’s immune system develops over time, they could fall prey to some of common medical conditions before their immune system is fully functional.

Skin, ear and throat infections, cold and flu, and sinus issues are amongst the most common illnesses or medical conditions that young children are most susceptible to. Adding to this list are some uncommon issues that usually affect adults. However, children are also susceptible to them.

Here are some common adult medical issues that can also affect children:

A is for arthritis

According to Arthritis South Africa, juvenile arthritis is the world’s leading contributor to musculoskeletal disabilities in children. In SA, between 19-25 0000 children are affected by arthritis, and most are left undiagnosed. COVID-19 has contributed to a rise in undiagnosed cases. Symptoms are left unnoticed or kids may adapt to them.

3 Common symptoms of arthritis in children are:

  1. A change in the child’s levels of physical activity
  2. Painful, hot, or inflamed joints
  3. Fatigue

Good to know: Parents need to seek medical attention should they notice these symptoms, especially the sore joints. Early diagnosis is key when treating juvenile arthritis.

T is for Thrush

Thrush is an oral yeast infection caused by an oversupply of Candida. A yeast infection is more common in groups that have a weakened immune system. Some children may not show any clear symptoms but may complain about discomfort in the mouth, or struggle to eat and swallow.

4 Symptoms of thrush are:

  1. Pain when swallowing
  2. White patches on the mouth and inside
  3. Burning in the mouth
  4. Abnormal taste

Good to know: Your child will need anti-fungal medication to help treat the infection. So, you will need to see a doctor as soon as you can.

U is for Urinary Tract Infections

Bacterial build-up on a child’s skin or poop can lead to a bladder infection, commonly known as a Urinary Tract Infection. Children as young as two years old can contract this disease.

3 UTI symptoms in children are:

  1. Signs of pain during urination
  2. More urine accidents
  3. Pain in the abdomen, back, or sides

Good to know: A urine test done by a doctor is the main way a UTI can be detected in children. So, if you suspect that your child may be experiencing this, go to your healthcare provider.

V is for Vaginal yeast infection

A yeast infection is uncommon amongst girls that have not hit puberty yet. It does not mean that younger girls cannot get the infection. A yeast infection is caused by an overgrowing fungus called Candida. The presence of Candida is normal, but an excess of the fungus can lead to a vaginal yeast infection.

3 Common symptoms of a yeast infection are:

  1. Vaginal itchiness and pain
  2. White vaginal discharge
  3. White patches on the vagina

Good to know: If your daughter complains about pain and itchiness, seek medical attention for them.
