Tekwane born artist nominated for MAMA Awards 2020

Smeeth didn't allow his stammering problem to stand in the way to success. No one will ever notice it when he is performing.

A local hip-hop artist hopes to represent the people of this Kasi and Mpumalanga well in the upcoming Mzansi Arts and Media Awards (MAMA) 2020. The awards are aimed at uplifting artists from grassroots level and assisting them in reaching their dreams within the arts and media industry. The 28-year-old Smeeth, whose real name is Sizwe Mnisi, has been nominated in this year’s MAMA under the best upcoming artist category. Smeeth didn’t allow his stammering problem to stand in the way to success. No one will ever notice it when he is performing. “Singing comes naturally and the lyrics just flow. Many radio presenters are surprised that I stammer during live interviews, but sing so fluently. Singing is my gift from God,” he said. Smeeth’s newly released music video “Squezza” featuring Fana Mkhindva was number one on Ligwalagwala FM for three weeks. It paved the way for his first-ever MAMA nomination. He previously won the award for the best hip-hop artist in the province at the 2018 BMF Awards. Last year, he won a mentorship award from DJ Zoe’s fourth Music Creative’s Workshop. “I look forward to reaping the benefits of that award, as many programmes were halted by the lockdown and the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic,” he said. Smeeth started his music career in 2006. He went solo in 2018 with his own single “Mabhiya ami a juicy.” He is currently working on his new album amaFour Room, which is inspired by his upbringing in a four-roomed house in KaNyamazane. y.
