Decide Chauke, Felix Badenhorst and Bathusi Aubaas are goalscoring machines in GladAfrica Championship

Ajax's Abednego Mosiatlhaga is leading the race for the Golden Boot with 16 goals

With fans, players, coaching staff and club officials patiently waiting for the resumption of the 2019/20 soccer season, news on the beautiful game has been scarce, especially domestically.

To give local fans a boost in their wait for the return of soccer, particularly to Kameelrivier, KaNyamazane and KaBokweni stadiums, Mpumalanga News looks at the top-goalscorer stats in the GladAfrica Championship.

With the Covid-19 coronavirus lockdown bringing the season to a halt after the 24th week of competition in March, fans have had no live games to attend.

If and when the league does resume, fans will not be allowed in the stadiums, but at least their teams will be in back on the pitches, completing their remaining matches.

The action in the GladAfrica Championship before the season was halted spoke volumes of the quality of football in the second tier of South African competition.

A total of 461 goals were scored in 190 GladAfrica matches, an average of 2,4 per game.

Top goalscorer, and almost assured of the Golden Boot Award, is Abednego Mosiatlhaga of log leaders Ajax, with 16 goals.
This included an incredible five-game streak between October 6 and December 15, 2019, in which he scored in every league match, including two goals against JDR Stars.

Second on the top-goalscorer list is Moeketsi Makhanya of JDR Stars with 12 goals.

Three players are in third place with 11 goals each. They are Daniel Gozar of Free State Stars, Menzi Ndwandwe of Uthongathi and Ruzaigh Gamildien of Steenberg United.

Languishing in 12th, 13th and 14th places respectively on the log table, Mpumalanga-based teams, TS Galaxy, TS Sporting and Mbombela United do not have any players on the top-three goalscorers list.

The best of the players from the three Mpumalanga clubs is Decide Chauke of TS Sporting. With eight goals, he shares fifth place with four others.
In three consecutive league matches, from October 19 to November 2, 2019, he scored five goals, two against Cosmos, one against Ajax and two against Amatuks.

Felix Badenhorst of Mbombela United is his club’s leading scorer with six. This puts the 31-cap Kingdom of eSwatini international in joint seventh place.

TS Galaxy’s Bathusi Aubaas has also scored six goals in the GladAfrica 2019/20 season.
