Advocate defies odds and pursues his dreams

Born in Pienaar and later relocating to Mayflower, Adv Sikhumbuzo Nkosi spoke about experiencing police brutality as a child, his passion for criminal law and how he manages to win most of his cases.

MBOMBELA – He reckons he lives up to his nickname, the “Lion King”, he earned in the courtroom when it comes to matters of law, especially criminal cases.

Born in Pienaar and later relocating to Mayflower, Adv Sikhumbuzo Nkosi spoke about experiencing police brutality as a child, his passion for criminal law and how he manages to win most of his cases.

“Growing up in a township, I came across situations where youngsters would be beaten up by the police or be accused of being a bad influence on the younger boys. I have had bad experiences with the police in my childhood, which made me realise that at times, the police abuse their power. Fortunately, my mother was able to take me to school.”

He admitted law was not his first choice, but he fell in love with it when he researched it, and completed his studies at the University of Johannesburg. He started out as a legal assistant at Nkosi Attorneys and was promoted to assistant managing director. With 13 years of experience, he started his own practice last July and specialises in criminal law.

“I’m proud to say I win 95 per cent of my cases, having lost only two in 2019. Many have asked what my formula is and I always tell people I believe in preparation and prayer. I do get a lot of backlash for my victories, but I am able to handle different people’s attitudes and behaviours. Being a reserved person and staying committed to my job are what keeps me safe and away from negativity,” he said.

Nkosi also encouraged youngsters to consider pursuing this career path, but warned that one needs to have a thick skin.

“This career has challenges and if you are passionate and have your goals set, you will definitely make it to the top. Those from previously disadvantaged backgrounds like me have it hard financially after university, while some get exploited. I am glad I managed to defy the odds and chose to chase my dreams. First acquire the dream with a unique style, and money will chase you,” he concluded.
