SATMA winner from Bhuga proud but still humble

Passion Master was the winner of the Best SiSwati Album at the South African Traditional Music Awards (SATMA) 2019.

A local VIP protector at the South African Revenue Services in town has proven to be a jack of all trades.
Besides providing protection services at his workplace, Vusi Thulane Mazibuko, popularly known as “Passion Master”, still finds time to pursue his passion of music and songwriting.

He is a SiSwati singer and composer from Bhuga, situated on the outskirts of KaBokweni. He describes his nomination and winning the SATMA as the best moments of his music career.
“Winning the award means that anything is possible despite one’s background. I am grateful to the citizens of the country for voting for me. This makes me feel even more recognized in the industry after 15 years of singing,” he said.

Passion Master started pursuing music in 2004 while he was still a student at the Tshwane University of Technology, singing along with four friends in the group Black Nature, where he offered to write a chorus for their song, “Impilo yaseKasi”.

He has been writing and singing ever since. Passion Master later joined the Minds Adjourned, which is where he realised his own talent. He describes his sound as tribal soul, which is a mixture of Umbhacanga, Isicathamiya and afro-pop. He started singing house music and only ventured into afro-pop music in 2018.

“Jay Spitter of Mabala Noise introduced me to afro-pop music. I released my single, “Stay with me”, featuring Jay Spitter, last year. This song opened many doors and helped me to be recognised in the industry,” he said.

In July, Passion Master released his debut album Litelaphi lami, consisting of 14 songs. The album’s hit songs include “Igedzemane”, “Kasomahhashi” and “Anginawo lamaningi” to mention but a few. It features other artists, including Jay Spitter, Tizo, Senior General and Lady NK, and eventually saw him winning the 2019 SATMA.
