Talented musicians, apply for the Hugh Masekela scholarship

The Scholarship is aimed at young South African musical talent who face social, cultural and economic challenges, and nonetheless have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to advancing their craft.

Applications for the 2020 intake of the Manhattan School of Music Hugh Masekela Scholarship are now open until December 1. All applications should be submitted directly to the Manhattan School of Music via their website, www.msmnyc.edu.

Through this intervention, six qualifying students over three years will receive a scholarship to attend one of the world’s most prestigious music conservatories – an institution where a young Masekela studied for 4 years.

The Scholarship is aimed at young South African musical talent who face social, cultural and economic challenges, and nonetheless have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to advancing their craft. Throughout his life, Masekela was an exemplar of the principle that ‘the learning never ends’ – his curiosity, eagerness to learn and collaborate with others, was a hallmark of his appeal to audiences and fellow-creatives alike. Similarly, his lifelong obsession with showcasing and preserving African heritage, particularly through music, earned him a dedicated fanbase the world over.

As such, the Hugh Masekela Heritage Scholarship represents an opportunity for South Africa’s future musical legends to receive training at one of the world’s most renowned musical institutions, a school that prides itself on a vibrant student body who come from more than 45 countries around the world.
