Top 5 Campsites in the Kruger National Park

Although the Kruger is a popular day trip destination, nothing beats staying in the park for a day or two to truly experience nature.

The Kruger National Park is the perfect getaway for wildlife lovers and people looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It is regarded to be one of the ultimate safari destinations in Africa, boasting two million hectares of untouched wilderness and as many as 147 mammal species and over 500 bird species.

Although the Kruger is a popular day trip destination, nothing beats staying in the park for a day or two to truly experience nature. It is amazing how being isolated and surrounded only by animals and wild bush can help relax the mind and enlighten the soul.

There are several self-catering rest camps scattered around the Kruger but there are a select few that are popular amongst travelers who enjoy adventurous camping.

Satara Rest Camp

Set near the centre of the Kruger, Satara is one of the biggest rest camps, with as many as 100 powered campsites and good facilities. Satara is popular because of its location within an excellent game viewing area.

Satara is well wooded and the bird-life is incredible. When the sun sets, one can hear the sounds of fruit bats and chirping crickets; along with the calls of owls, jackals and lions.

Berg-en-Dal Rest Camp

Berg-en-Dal is located in southern Kruger and boasts a breathtaking mountainous landscape. Dry riverbeds and large trees line the camp on both the northern and southern sides. There are a total of 72 campsites that are all set on level ground. The best sites however are found along the fence where you are likely to see animals through the fence – elephant and rhino are seen frequently. These sites do get booked out quickly so one should arrive as early as possible to claim one of these sites.

Crocodile Bridge Rest Camp

Located in the southern reaches of the Kruger is the satellite Crocodile Bridge Rest Camp which  boasts eighteen shaded sites that all have power points, rotating braai grids, and communal ablutions and cooking facilities. The camp is located in a popular game viewing area where water sources are abundant and wildlife appear in large numbers, particularly antelope and various predators.

Balule Satellite Camp

Situated in the centre of the Kruger, Balule is one of the smaller rest camps and offers a more exclusive experience with only 15 campsites. Almost all of the campsites are positioned alongside the camp fence, affording incredible game viewing opportunities. The area surrounding the camp is popular for lions, elephants, hyenas and leopard sightings.

The sites have no electricity but the communal facilities provide hot running water and gas stoves.
