Opel streamlines Astra range, adds new OPC-Line automatic

In its first major revision since debuting three years ago, Opel South Africa distributor Unitrans Motors has introduced a streamlined Astra range topped by a new automatic derivate.

Announced earlier this year, the revisions sees the range shrinking from eight to four models with the previous 1.0T Essentia, 1.4T Sport and 1.6T Sport and Sport Plus falling away completely, leaving the 1.0T base and Enjoy, the 1.4T Enjoy and the all-new 1.6T OPC-Line as the models available.

As it name suggests, the greater focus has been placed on the OPC-Line which receives a model specific bodykit, 18-inch alloy wheels, an optional tilt/sliding sunroof and an OPC-Line interior with alloy pedals and a heated steering wheel. Carried over from the Sport Plus though, the OPC-Line comes as standard with the eight-inch Intellilink infotainment incorporating satellite navigation, the Matrix IntelliLux LED headlights, Hill Start Assist and Advanced Park Assist.

Up front, the Astra’s range of engines has been kept as is with the entry-level 1.0-litre turbocharged three-pot producing 77 kW and 170 N.m of torque, and the bigger 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbo 110 kW and 245 N.m. The OPC-Line’s forced induced 1.6 meanwhile churns out 147 kW and 280 N.m. The biggest change is in the transmission department where the 1.0-litre retains the five-speed manual gearbox, while both the 1.4 and 1.6 now come solely with a six-speed automatic ‘box, a new addition for latter initially offered initially only with the six-speed manual.

A three year/120 000 km warranty and five year/90 000 km service plan is once again standard on all models.
