Film-makers shoot pure gold in Emjindini

An exciting drama series set in Barberton, Emjindini, is set to premiere tonight on SABC 1.

The miniseries, shot by youth-owned production company Image In Imagine, is part of the broadcasting corporation’s Woza Nazo batch of new series, which seeks to shed light on the challenges faced by workers in small towns.

The story, written by a screenwriter, director and editor, Magalela Mtshali, centres around Amos Shabangu (Freedom Mswane), a mineworker who tirelessly works at a 100-year-old mine that has kept him away from his family.
One day Shabangu finds a bag of gold coins buried following an earth tremor brought on by his own negligence.

While the bag seems like the solution to his problems, he has to deal with an evil superior, a naïve and overzealous colleague and looming protest that threatens his score.

Faces you can expect to see in the series include award-winning actor Sisanda Henna, Laki Khoza, Nomalanga Nkosi, Gospel Gold’s Sthembile Mhlongo and Zigi Ndlovu, among others.

As lead actor in the series, Mswane said playing the role of Shabangu resonated with him because he could relate to his character and real life. “Just like Amos, I am a father trying my best to provide for my children and a significant amount of research helped me prepare for my role.”

Mhlongo, who plays Nomvula, shared her sentiments, stating that the role was an eye-opener for her as it gave some insight into the daily struggles of female mineworkers. “I already knew about it, but having to actually experience it really opened my mind. (My character) Nomvula is not afraid to express her feelings and emotions, which is nothing like me. Playing her made me realise I have to be more like her,” she said.
