The first round of last 32 games of the Selati Cup kicked off last weekend with Tonga Chelsea, Mangweni Peacemakers, Screamers Eleven and Shongwe Chiefs booking themselves a place in the last 16 of this lucrative amateur soccer tournament.

Shongwe Chiefs, named after the Shongwe Royal Kraal, were the pick of the weekend with both soccer fans and analysts hoping to see if the team still had something that initially made them popular with in the tournament. Chiefs brought their A game and easily cruised to a 2 – 0 victory against Hhoyi Darkies, with soccer maestro Lindani Dube scoring a brace for the Chiefs that separated the two teams.

The winning captain, Nhlanhla Thelezi said they wanted to emulate the class of 2007 that had an outstanding run in the competition and in their league, “We are aware that all eyes are on us. Every fan wants to see if we are taking this team higher or killing it. But so far things have been going our way and it’s all because of proper planning and hard work. I don’t want to lie, it was not easy when we started this campaign. We had many problems and challenges but after winning our first game, things started to pick up and we were able to gel very well as a team. The results here today are a true reflection of our hard work and perseverance. We played as a unit and were able to come out tops.”

Going forward Thelezi said there is no stopping them now and they are very determined to play in the finals. “We are ready to take on any team, we’ve come too far to drop the ball now, there’s no one who will stop us from playing in the finals. We are ready, the spirit in our camp is very high and this will definitely work in our favour because a motivated player is a winning player” he ended.
