Book Reviews

Here are the latest releases from South African authors.

Title: Dominoes: Unbreakable Spirit
Author: Somizi Mhlongo
Rating: 6/10
It took me quite a while to get this book after its release. I have no regrets buying it for R180 even though I feel there should have been more detailed chapters about Somgaga. He tells it like it is and despite a few typos here and there, it is a good read where you are taken back to those days when families were still united and had those Christmas holidays in the township. Not really a rags-to-riches story, but Somgaga has soldiered on through trials and tribulations. Really inspiring and it is worth reading.

Title: Born a Crime
Author: Trevor Noah
Rating: 8/10
Thumbs up to Trevor on this one! There’s both humour and reality and putting it down was a mission. I like how he talks about his mother and many can actually relate. It gives you a different perspective on life in the townships and during the apartheid era as well as the fact that we all have stories to tell – although in many ways. It’s funny and it won’t be a surprise if he reveals that he too (Trevor) laughs at the stuff written in the book.
