How to beat the festive bulge this festive season

According to research, the weight gained during holiday seasons usually occurs around the midriff. This is associated with an increased risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Why not make this year a time where you don’t have to ask for a larger belt in your Christmas stocking?

Here are tips to help you avoid gaining weight this festive season:

1. Limit certain party foods. Avoid going to parties hungry. Instead try to snack on something light before to avoid high-calorie party food.
Foods to limit: Creamy dips, pies, sausages, cakes and corn chips.
Foods to enjoy: Sushi, sandwiches, fruit salad, low-fat yoghurt and pretzels
2. Alcohol – Drinking alcohol may add to the enjoyment of your festive events, but over-consuming can also lead to weight gain. When drinking watch your serving size, be careful with top-ups and alternate your drink with non-alcoholic beverages like water.
3. Exercise – You can start by joining a gym to stay fit all year round. Also set an exercise challenge for the new year. If you’re on vacation, use the facilities at your destination. For example make use of tennis courts and other outdoor facilities.
