Home teams off to a flying start

The Steval Pumas started their Absa Currie Cup campaign with an impressive 33-24 victory over the Sharks at the Mbombela Stadium last Friday

Two of the provincial teams campaigning in the country’s elite leagues, the Premier Soccer League and the Absa Currie Cup, got their campaigns off to a flying start.

The Steval Pumas started their Absa Currie Cup campaign with an impressive 33-24 victory over the Sharks at the Mbombela Stadium last Friday.

On Saturday, Mpumalanga Black Aces’ Absa Premiership campaign also received a major boost when they registered an away 1-0 victory over Free State Stars. These wins have put both teams on better positions on the log. The Pumas are comfortably placed in the fourth place on the Currie Cup table, while Aces are sitting in position three.

“This is certainly a good start for us. This is actually what we said we wanted to do and I believe we have started.
“We want to collect as many points as we can in the first round so that we are not pressured in the second part of the season,” said Aces spokesperson, Gordon Masondo. Tomorrow the Pumas will travel to Johannesburg where they have yet another tough date with the Golden Lions.
They may be without some of their key players who sustained injuries during their clash against the Sharks.

According to the medical report released the team’s physiotherapist, Luzahn Louw, Rudi Mathee suffered an acromion clavicle (shoulder) and Rosko Specman also suffered a shoulder injury and it’s still not known if he would be able to play anytime soon.

The game kicks off at 19:10 at the Emirates Airline Park Stadium. On the other hand, Aces will take a short break this weekend and will only be in action again on August 22 where they will face Supersport United at the Mbombela Stadium.
