Wheels spin at sport day

More than 200 disabled people participated during this fun-filled day by engaging in different sporting activities.

The Mbombela Local Municipality in partnership with Mpumalanga Black Aces held games for the physically challenged at Nsikazi Stadium last Saturday.

The games, organised by the municipal’s social development and community services department, included wheelchair basketball and hula hoops.

More than 200 disabled people participated during this fun-filled day by engaging in different sporting activities.

According to the organiser, Sibongile Mthombothi, the main aim was to brighten up their lives and encourage them to participate in sport.

“We live in a cruel society where people with disabilities are discriminated against and by organising these kind of games we want them to choose any sporting code that will best suit them and which they will excel in.

Caring for these people should be a day-to-day thing since they require extra care. We should be cautious though and not overdo it but rather give them space so that they can make decisions on their own. Our role as parents or mentors is to fully support them,” she said.

The organisers have promised to give the youngsters game time, especially indigenous games.

After these games, those who participated were then chauffeured to the KaNyamazane Stadium to watch the Premier Soccer League encounter between Mpumalanga Black Aces and Polokwane City.
