Getting to know RISE FM’s Lilly Makofane

Mpumalanga News had a one-on-one session with the effervescent DJ of RISE FM, Lilly Makofane.

Who is Lilly and where are you from?

Lilly is a daring “forever young” woman who was born in Praktiseer, Burgersfort. I wish I could say that I was raised in Burgersfort but when I turned 13, I was placed in a boarding school, the Middelburg Combined School in Nazareth.

To be honest, that’s where I grew up. Thereafter I relocated to Witbank and then moved to Mbombela where I currently live.

Why did you choose to become a radio presenter, and why particularly RISE FM?

Bad Radio and my love and respect for good music. I used to record myself “presenting” radio shows on this tiny silver cassette player/recorder.

It was my most precious possession as a young premature DJ. I sucked at it, but it was nothing a bit of practice couldn’t fix.
Years later my cassettes turned into demos… I submitted my first demo at Barberton Community Radio Station.
Today I work for RISE FM, man it’s crazy, I still can’t believe I made it this far. I didn’t have a hard time getting into radio, not sure why.

RISE FM Daytimes with Lilly – what makes your show unique and different from others?

ME! That is what’s unique about Daytimes with Lilly. I believe my personality is what makes the show. I am a non-pretentious person, sometimes crazy, fun, curious, and I keep it real, and so do my listeners.

What has been the most embarrassing moment in your life?
Middelburg! Let me paint the picture: you go for a bath, return to your room, throw your towel on the floor, unaware that there’s a group of people staring at you through your bedroom window.

All this because you didn’t bother to close your damn curtains. It’s all a big joke to me now. Lucky them!

Is Lilly studying, working on any other projects?

I am an entrepreneur, a hip-hop DJ, and a part-time model. Look, I’d rather show than tell.

We know you own a bike, why not a car?
Good question…

Who is your best friend and what advice has she given you, especially about your job in the media?

My mother is my best friend, she is everything else above friendship too. Her advice, “You can’t make a living out of broadcasting.

“My dad told me the very same thing when I passed matric. He asked me what field I wanted to study in, so I eagerly said entertainment/radio/television.

“That’s not a real job,” he said. I’ve proven them both wrong and it’s blissful. There’s something about proving people wrong that keeps you going.

Lilly loves hip-hop music. What is it about the genre that you love so much?

I love all kinds of music. Jazz/hip hop/ RnB/house. Okay, maybe I prefer hip hop above the rest. I’d rather listen to JayZ rapping, “I’m so far ahead of my time; I’m ’bout to start another life.

Look behind you, I’m ’bout to pass you twice,” than someone singing welcome to my sex room.

What are the three things you look for in a potential partner?
Next question please!

Describe yourself in one word?

Bold.
