Kings ready for Sharks encounter

Southern Kings coach Carlos Spencer is set to implement changes for the Super Rugby friendly match against a Sharks XV in Port Elizabeth on Friday.

The change of names in the Kings team will allow Spencer to assess his options ahead of the Currie Cup competition.

A convincing 66-28 win over a young Bulls side handed the coach some confidence after he made nine changes to the starting line-up for the clash, and he is set to do the same once again.

Spencer believes that there is enough depth in the Kings squad, but some players still needed to cement their positions.

“Everyone is under pressure because nobody is guaranteed their spots at this stage,” Spencer said.

“It’s another opportunity for the players to put their hands up.”

Young flyhalf Gary van Aswegen will make a start in the pivot position, while backline player Siyanda Grey made his return to playing after more than a year off due to injury.

“This is an opportunity for Gary to put his hand up because he is on a one-month loan from Western Province. But everyone is under pressure to produce, not only Gary,” added the coach.

“I am sure there will be a few butterflies for Siyanda because he has not played for a while, but we just want him to get back into it, to do the basics well and gain confidence with some game time.”
