Mbombela might play host to chiefs and WITS

Word from stadium management is that they are in talks with WITS to consider bringing the game here.

Despite lack of interest and support from the general public, the 2010 Soccer World Cup stadium, Mbombela, might have another opportunity to host yet another exciting cup encounter.

This after Bidvest WITS drew against Kaizer Chiefs in the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup on Monday.

The Students, or Clever Boys as they are affectionately known by their fans, are using the Mbombela Stadium as their second home, especially when they are playing with the so-called big teams of the PSL, such as Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.

Even though Mpumalanga News could not get any official correspondence from WITS management at the time going to print, insiders hinted at the possibility of this clash coming to Mbombela.

Support from local soccer fanatics hasn’t been impressive, especially when the home team, Mpumalanga Black Aces played here. The only time the stadium was jam-packed or sold out was whenever Kaizer Chiefs made an appearance.

It’s proven that Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns supporters are the worst ever, since they can’t even make a quarter whenever their teams play here.

Mbombela made a name for itself just after the Soccer World Cup, when it hosted a number of high-profile games which were sold out, but thereafter the support just faded.

Word from stadium management is that they are in talks with WITS to consider bringing the game here.

Even though many soccer pundits believe that WITS stand a better chance of winning against Chiefs when playing in Millpark than at Mbombela, the team has turned this into their own happy hunting ground. Just two weeks ago, they beat Black Aces 2-1.

The Nedbank semi-finals are scheduled for the first week of May.
