Once you pick it up, it will be very hard to put down until you’ve read every last word. Hennie Keyter’s His Call, My All is one of those rare books that sucks you in from the first word.
For any Christian, South African or person interested in the life of a missionary, this book is truly exceptional. Written from Hennie’s perspective and following his missionary work in Africa, it gives you a glimpse into Africa’s hunger for the gospel and the amazing effect God’s word has on people.
The book details Hennie’s life, with each chapter marked by the place and date the events that follow took place. Relevant extracts from the Bible intertwine with the text, underscoring the actions of the people in the book or adding an interesting perspective on that particular verse or verses.
Letters from people who have men Hennie and his family and whose lives have changed are interspersed throughout the book and gives flesh to each chapter and serves as an affirmation of the life-changing power of God’s word.
The first-person retelling of Hennie’s life is written in easily-read, simple language, but still manages to convey the weight of the work Hennie has done.
Because the book follows a chronological storyline, you get drawn into Hennie’s life and with each page get more invested in the outcome of each of his adventures. From a plane crash in the middle of a warzone to facing a firing squad in Mozambique, Hennie’s courage and faith will amaze and inspire you.
As you reach the third of the book, it reveals a surprise. A few colour photos depicting Hennie, Rita (his wife), Anton (their son), their daily life and some of the people they’ve worked with. Another couple of photos await you after reading about two-thirds of the book. This allows you to get a clear picture of what Hennie describes and also serves to create the illusion of a diary.
The book ends with a few lessons that Hennie has learned throughout his life and he expresses the hope that his words may encourage and help believers. His story is still not over and Hennie looks forward to continuing God’s work for as long as He requires it of him.
