Idols Top 7 struggle to impress judges

The judges loved the group performance but said they were not impressed with the solo perfomances.

In another SA Idols performance this week, the Top 7 contestants competed for the public’s votes at the Morelete Auditorium in Pretoria on Sunday night with the help of the Idols Choir, put together especially by Idols Musical Director, RJ Benjamin.

Altogether,The Top 7 gave a spectacular performance of Katy Perry’s mega-hit, Roar. The judges loved the group performance but said they were not impressed with the solo perfomances.

“Your song choice for tonight is utterly boring and this makes your perfomances boring,” said Gareth Cliff.

Mpumalanga’s gentle giant from eMalahleni, Musa Sukwene competed for votes with R&B superstar Anthony Hamilton’s ‘Pass Me Over’.

“That was a boring song, and your least interesting performance of the show so far,” complained Gareth. But Unathi said she thought it was a very powerful performance.

“I think what you did with one of Anthony Hamilton’s greatest anthems is you brought more life to it than he ever did,” she said. Randall liked the parts of the song where Musa “started to testify”, as he put it, but he pointed out again that at this stage of the competition the singers have to capture the audience from the very start of each song.

Brenden, the ladies’ favourite, did justice to Josh Groban’s ‘You Raise Me Up’. Gareth said that though the contestants must have been advised “by a panel from the old-age home” on their song choices .

“This material is dropping all of you right now,” he complained. Unathi agreed that the performers were struggling and were not at their best since last week. Randall said that the fact that Brenden already has a group of followers that will support him regardless of whether he has a good week or a bad week.

He advised him to be a lot more aware by around the Top Three stage.
