Netball event on the cards for June

The tiny village of Elukwatini will come alive when the Built it-sponsored netball tournament kicks off on Saturday June 19.

Organised by the John XXV events and management team, this netball competition is set to feature teams from this area within the Chief Albert Luthuli Local Municipality.

According to John Nkosi, one of the local community builders, the purpose of the competition is to encourage girls to participate into sports and to promote a healthy lifestyle and create a relationship among youth in the area.

“We are hoping this competition will keep our girls occupied with something meaningful, instead of roaming the streets without anything to do,” said Nkosi. Local schools participate during a friendly netball tournament held at Benjamin Primary School.  He said teams that want to participate are not going to be charged any fees as they want to make this competition a community-building affair. He said the Covid-19 pandemic has kept most girls locked behind closed doors and this competition would also help them mingle and socialise once again, but in a more responsible manner.

“We are extending the invitation to other young girls from outside our area, such as in Nhlazatshe, Tjakastaad and Mooiplaas, to come and be part of these games. If you want your team to participate or to get more information, please call 082- 497-9427 or 079-969-7288. Closing date for registration is Sunday May 30,” said Nkosi.
