TS Galaxy to play 15 home matches at Mbombela Stadium

The Rockets will be the only Mpumalanga club in the 2020/21 PSL.

Premier Soccer League (PSL) matches will return to Mbombela Stadium in the 2020/21 season.

This morning TS Galaxy Football Club officially announced, in a media release, the acquisition of the status of Premiership club, Highlands Park.

The acquisition comes at the back of lengthy and delicate discussions, where a mutual agreement was finally reached by both parties which will see TS Galaxy Football Club campaigning in the PSL of South African football.

The sale has been ratified by the executive committee of the PSL.

TS Galaxy will relocate to Mbombela Stadium. Negotiations are in progress and contracts are yet to be signed concerning the use of the 43 500-seat World Cup stadium by the Rockets.

“The Rockets will make use of the iconic Mbombela Stadium as their home venue for the upcoming season. This is as a result of the unavailability of the club’s traditional home base, Kameelrivier Stadium in the north-western corner of Mpumalanga, as it does not meet the standards of hosting premiership fixtures as prescribed by the PSL,” said club spokesperson, Thabang Mazibuko.

The new season is expected to kick-off on the weekend of October 16.

The Mbombela Stadium manager, Roelf Kotze, said this morning that he is aware of TS Galaxy’s interest to make Mbombela Stadium their home ground.

“We are aware of discussions concerning the matter, but nothing is official yet,” he said.

According to the media release, as part of the club’s ongoing efforts of building a highly competitive side ahead of the new season, some key changes have been made to the club’s technical department.

The Rockets welcome back Dan “Dance” Malesela who will serve as the head coach of the club.

The accomplishments of Malesela with TS Galaxy are well documented. He led the club to its historic Nedbank Cup triumph which has made TS Galaxy the only club from the lower ranks to win South Africa’s biggest knockout competition.

Malesela will be assisted by Esau Mtsweni, who joined the club last season as an assistant coach.

Another technical change will then see Mabhuti Khenyeza shifting focus to the development structures of the club as head coach of the MultChoice Diski Challenge (MDC) side. In addition, the Rockets are proud to welcome former Bidvest Wits player and and new goalkeeper coach, Tyron Damons.

Veteran defender, Thabo Nthethe, who signed with the club last season, will now serve as the team manager. Nthethe captained the club in his last professional match in TS Galaxy colours in the win against Uthongathi FC in the last match off the season.

TS Galaxy FC’s status in the GladAfrica Championship has been sold back to its former holders, Cape Town All Stars.

“The club will soon make further announcements on its squad composition for next season,” said Mazibuko.

The 2020/21 PSL season fixtures will be announced by the end of September.
