Cyclists ready to tackle tour

The six-stage race is bigger and better this year, which will see the tour going to Limpopo. It has drawn riders from the United States of America and France

It is all systems go for the second annual Mpumalanga Cycle Tour, which starts today at the Loskop Dam outside Middelburg and finishes on Tuesday January 17 at the Blyde Canyon.

“We are excited to yet again host the Mpumalanga Cycle Tour, which brings together top cyclists. The tour acts as an opener of the road cycling season in the country,” says culture, sport and recreation spokesperson, Sibongile Nkosi, whose department is the main sponsor.

According to Nkosi, the six-stage race is bigger and better this year, which will see the tour going to Limpopo. It has drawn riders from the United States of America and France.

“The Mpumalanga Cycle Tour is only in its second year, but it has already grown in stature and attracted overseas riders. As a department, we are also pleased that it has attracted 26 cyclists of colour,” adds Nkosi.

The tour started with a gala dinner last night at the Forever Resort in Loskop Dam.

Today, cyclists will battle for top honours in stage one (197 kilometres) from Loskop to Badplaas.

Tomorrow, stage two (99 kilometres), from Badplaas Forever Resort to Mbombela.
Saturday, stage three (140 kilometres), in and around Mbombela.
Sunday, stage four (109 kilometres), from White River Forever Resort to Mount Sheba Forever Resort.
Monday, stage five (121 kilometres), from Mount Sheba Forever Resort to Swadini Forever Resort.
Tuesday, stage six (85,2 kilometres), from Swadini Forever Resort to Blyde Canyon Forever Resort
