Selati Cup off to a great start

"The games started with a bang and we are happy with the manner in which they have been handled and welcomed by our communities."

The 10th instalment of the tried-and- tested Selati Cup got off a good start last weekend with over 60 teams battling it out in the first round.

Proudly sponsored by RCL Foods, formerly TSB, this soccer tournament has this year attracted the attention of more than 200 teams.

This tourney, known for causing upsets, is staged annually in the Nkomazi subregion, with the games spread across the local communities of this municipality.

The tournament’s spokesperson, Kenneth Phiri, said all the scheduled games were played and as usual produced nothing but entertaining football on the fields and great atmosphere in the stands.

“The games started with a bang and we are happy with the manner in which they have been handled and welcomed by our communities.

“The support was great and we believe that as the tournament progresses the numbers of soccer spectators will also grow,” said Phiri.

There have been fears from the local communities, that this event may be halted following the sale of the giant milling company, TSB.

RCL Foods decided to continue with the tournament.

Phiri cautioned soccer supporters and teams participating to drink enough water to stay hydrated in the heat.

The Selati Cup, which has come to be known as the subregion’s mini World Cup, has 288 participating teams this year.

Matches continue this weekend.
