Mbombela United in it for the money

After Sunday's victory, Tingwenyama climbed back to the fifth spot on the National First Division (NFD) table with 34 points.

Mbombela United will travel to the Mother City with their heads held high after an impressive 3-1 victory over AmaZulu this past Sunday at KaNyamazane Stadium.

The home team has two tricky dates against the 14th-placed Mthatha Bucks on Sunday at Mthatha Stadium at 15:30, followed by the 10th-spot holders, Santos FC at Athlone Stadium next Friday.

After Sunday’s victory, Tingwenyama climbed back to the fifth spot on the National First Division (NFD) table with 34 points.

They are now five points behind log leaders, Baroka FC, who are at the top of the table with 39.

“We are slowly closing the gap and I am sure that some of the teams will drop some points as the season reaches its climax. All we need to do now is to focus and ensure that we collect maximum points, especially when playing at home,” said United’s spokesperson, Sostern Gutsa.

With regard to their two upcoming tough fixtures, Gutsa said, “It’s really going to be tough coming back with all six points from these teams. We all know that Umthatha Bucks are fighting to get out of the relegation zone and this makes them dangerous, but our boys are up for the challenge and they know what’s at stake here.

“As for the other match against Santos, I think our supporters still remember very well that we have travelled to Cape Town and have come back with all three points. Don’t get me wrong, Santos and all the Cape Town-based teams are good, but so are we.

“We just have to go there and play our normal football and I can assure you, we will come back alive.”

Gutsa said it ain’t over until it’s over. “Just look what’s happening on top of the log. People had already given Baroka FC a free ticket to the Premier League, but they are now under threat. All the current top-eight teams have equal chances of gaining promotions to the elite league,” Gutsa pointed out.
