Mbombela Stadium ready for Nedbank Cup Final

It's all systems go at Mbombela Stadium ahead of the 2023/24 Nedbank Cup final, which will be contested by Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundows in the Mpumalanga capital on Saturday June 1.

All plans are in place and procedures ready at Mbombela Stadium this Saturday, as the ground is set to host a Nedbank Cup final for the first time in 13 years.

Fans of Orlando Pirates and DStv Premiership champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, will descend on Mbombela Stadium for the final of the 2023/24 Nedbank Cup. It marks the second time Mbombela will host the final of South Africa’s premier cup competition, the first since 2011.

Since its last Nebank Cup final, the stadium has hosted a Telkom Knockout f inal (2013) and an MTN8 final in 2016, too. However, it has not played host to a major domestic football final since then.

Orlando Pirates have had mixed fortunes in finals at Mbombela Stadium. In the 2011 Nedbank Cup final, they beat Black Leopards 3-1, but lost the 2013 Telkom Knockout final 2-1 against Platinum Stars.

Mamelodi Sundowns played in the only other cup final at Mbombela Stadium, which they lost 3-0 against Bidvest Wits. Both sides will be hoping to improve their fortunes this weekend, though.

The management at Mbombela Stadium has also made a concerted effort to cater for the sold-out crowd that will make their way through the turnstiles on Saturday afternoon. With kick-off set for 15:00, the gates will open as early as 11:00.

Earlybird parking will be available at the stadium until 12:00, after which a soft closure of the roads into the stadium is implemented. Park-and-ride transport to the stadium will be available to the public from a variety of locations from 11:00 onwards. The schools will ask R50 for the secure parking on their grounds.

The park-and-ride locations are:
• Lowveld High School
• Valencia Park Sports Grounds
• Hoërskool Nelspruit
• Mbombela Showgrounds
• Hoërskool Bergvlam
• Riverside Mall
• Government Complex
• Fresh Produce Market on the Sabie road
