Win over Stellenbosch boost Mbombela chances of qualifying for NFD/PSL play-offs

Mbombela will be going down to Cape Town on Saturday to face another Cape side, Milano United looking for a win.

Mbombela United coach, Aschwin Sutton has not given-up on a late surge for National First Division (NFD)/Premier Soccer League (PSL) relegation/promotion play-offs spot.

Tingwenyama beat third placed – Stellenbosch FC – 2-1 in a league encounter that was held at KaNyamazane Stadium on Wednesday.
The local side took a 2-0 lead via their dribbling wizard Tsediso Patjie early in the first half before the evergreen Inky Masuku extended the lead to 2-0 from the spot-kick in the second half.

The team from the Cape Winelands community of Stellenbosch follow the relocation of Vasco Da Gama at the beginning of the season, got their consolation goal through Diego Brown with less than five minutes left in the clock.

Stellensbosch, who are in third spot with 37-points after 24-games, are occupying the last spot for the relegation/promotion play-offs.

Mbombela United coach Aschwin Sutton believes that his side can also get a spot in the NFD/PSL play-offs via a back-door.

The two teams that will finish second and third in the NFD respectively will play against the team that will finish in 15th spot in the PSL in a round robin mini league.

The team to top that mini league will be promoted straight to the land of honey – PSL, where teams are guaranteed a monthly grant of R1 . 5 – million unlike the measly R350 000 NFD teams survive on.
“We need to focus on winning our own games. You never know, maybe the teams above us might drop points and if that happens we might get at the back door of the relegation/promotional play-offs,” said Sutton.

Next-up for Sutton and his troops is a trip down to Cape where they will face-off Milano United at Blue Downs Stadium in Cape Town on Saturday.

Kick-off will be at 15:00.
