Belly Critic

Like most people, the only reason I remember that was because they handed Orlando Pirates their first-ever heavy defeat in their league history

Memory is a funny thing. Ask me what day it is and there is a pretty good chance I won’t know or I will give you the wrong answer.

If you give me a specific date with a little metal calculation, I might be able to tell you what was happening on the sports field around that time.

When it comes to sport, there are few a occasions that come to mind right away even though they took place more than a decade ago.

And as the year comes to an end, there are several events that captured the spotlight in Mpumalanga. In the long and sporadic history of Mpumalanga sports, there has never been a year like 2016.
Mpumalanga Black Aces deserted the people of Mpumalanga by selling their franchise to John Commitis, who renamed the team Cape Town City and also relocated it to Cape Town, leaving Mpumalanga fans without a team to support in the elite league.
We also saw Bidvest Wits winning the Wafa Wafa MTN 8 Cup final at Mbombela Stadium. I remember it because they emphatically beat reigning champions, Mamelodi Sundown 3-0.
We also welcomed SuperSport United to our province. Like most people, the only reason I remember that was because they handed Orlando Pirates their first-ever heavy defeat in their league history.

Few incidents that need not be condoned though as the year draws closer to an end, are the attacks of match officials.

Such behaviour should not be ushered into the New Year.
Most sporting codes will be taking a Christmas recess, hopefully next year we will have more sparkling sporting events taking place in our province.
I hope every sport fanatic will have a joyful Christmas and a happy New Year.
