Mpumalanga Black Aces stunned league chasers, Orlando Pirates with a 2-1 victory on Tuesday night. Played before a relatively good crowd at Mbombela Stadium, the home team approached the game like a house on fire and were rewarded a goal by Collins Mbesuma in the opening minutes.

After this Aces dictated matters not allowing the Pirates to play the phenomenal football they are known for. Aces took the lead in the first stanza. The second half started differently as Pirates started showing all the signs of an equaliser, with Kermit Erasmus coming closer.

It wasn’t too long though before the Buccaneers found an equaliser. Substitute, Lehlohonolo Majoro, drew level from the penalty spot in the 70th minute, after Aces keeper Jackson Mabokgwane had brought down Erasmus in the box.

Just when the game was slowly slipping away from Aces, Pirates gave away a soft penalty, which Mabhuti Khanyeza converted with ease to put Aces back in the driving seat. This was Aces’ second victory in a row, after defeating Moroka Swallows with 3-2 on Saturday.

This victory against Pirates has seen the home team temporarily moving up to the second spot on the table. Gordon Masondo, Aces spokesperson, said his team had now found its rhythm and therefore it would be difficult to lose at home.

“Like I said before, we are going to turn this stadium into our slaughterhouse and I believe we are on the right track. This victory against Pirates was proof enough that we are worthy title contenders and we will continue making our province and our supporters proud,” said Masondo.

He also appreciated the fact that more soccer supporters attended the match.
