BELLY CRITIC

I have been playing club cricket in Ehlanzeni since 2000 and I have never scored a 50. I want to get that monkey off my back in 2017.

What is the best way to start the new year? The answer is simple: make New Year’s resolutions.

During the tail end of last year, I sat down to draw up a list of 17 things to make this year a sporting annus mirabilis. It wasn’t an easy task, as I had to ignore calls from my Moreki, who needed assistance with killing Van Damme, but I managed to compile the list:

• Nothing will make me happier this year than Kaizer Chiefs hitting top form and going on to win the league title.
• I will be happy if either Mbombela United or Witbank Spurs win promotion to the Premier Soccer League.
• After capturing the imagination of rugby enthusiasts a couple of seasons ago, I am hoping the Steval Pumas will this year deliver the holy grail of South African rugby: the Currie Cup.
• This year, I want to honour an invitation from one of my cycling friends to do the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Race. From what I have seen on TV, it’s one of the must-do road races in the country.
• Watching the Soweto Derby live at Soccer City would be nice, but there’s a catch. I will only make the trek to Gauteng provided number one comes to fruition and the Glamour Boys have the match against Ajax Cape Town on February 25 to prove themselves.
• I will do the Barberton XCM and Uplands MTB Classic. In my view, these are the two most scenic mountain bike races in the Lowveld.
• There has been a lot of hype around Acornbush United, I hope the team will live up to the hype and win the league.
• I will be happy if Bafana Bafana wrap up qualification for 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia.
• I am praying the rugby head honchos find a strong sangoma who will undo the spell cast on Springboks.
The country is used to the rugby
boys giving us natural highs,
not headaches. Last year was
an awful year for the rugby
side. I hope 2017 is full of wins.

• To watch the Steval Pumas live in action. The whole of last year, I didn’t go to any of their home matches.
• As you read this, the Australian Open, the first grand slam of the year is four days away. I am hoping the tennis gods will grant Roger Federer major number 18.
