Alleged cable tampering and roadworks cause huge traffic jam in Mbombela

Some nyaope boys allegedly dug up some power cables, which resulted in some traffic lights being dysfunctional. This coincided with roadworks on the R40.

Traffic was severely congested in several roads in Mbombela this afternoon, February 14.

The robots are currently off. A senior traffic cop on the scene told Lowvelder that some nyaope boys allegedly dug up some electric cables near Rob Ferreira Hospital. “This resulted in a few robots being affected.”

The R40 and the Old Pretoria Road have been affected the most. The traffic department has set up some pointsmen at the Tiger Wheel & Tyre intersection on the R40. They are directing traffic travelling to and from the City, i’langa Mall, Riverside Mall and Barberton.

Some nyaope boys allegedly tampered with electric cables affecting several robots in Mbombela.

The traffic officer said the Tiger Wheel & Tyre intersection had erupted into chaos and they had to switch the robot off to regain control of the traffic flow.

This incident has coincided with some roadworks to deal with potholes on the R40. One lane of the road is closed to traffic as it has some heavy-duty machinery operating in it.
