Mkhuhlu’s young choral singer aims for successful music career

Hillary Mathebula hopes to get opportunities to achieve her dreams of being a renowned musician.

A Grade 12 Chayaza Secondary School learner, Hillary Mathebula (17), hopes to make it big as a choral musician just like her role model and Mpumalangan choral soprano, Pretty Yende.

The youngster from Mkhuhlu is gaining momentum with her angelic voice, gracing provincial stages and performing at events attended by MECs. Her performances have been commended by the Mpumalanga MEC for education, Cathy Dlamini, when she performed at the provincial instalment of the National Teaching Awards in August and the Mpumalanga Department of Education Business Breakfast Meeting on Monday October 7.

Hillary recently participated in the ABC Motsepe School Choral Eisteddfod, representing Mpumalanga. Although not winning in this competition, she has hopes that she will win others in the future.

The singer is quite shy, but she blooms when she performs.

“I started singing when I was in Grade Three. I love it.” She said she can sing anything, but fell in love with choral music as she grew older. “My dream is to be recognised and perform on big stages just like Pretty Yende.”

She said after matric she would like to pursue music and law as careers. “I have applied at various tertiary institutions to either study music or get a bachelor degree in law. However, I want to see my dream of becoming an internationally recognised musician realised,” Hillary said.

She added that she has worked very hard in her academics this year and is positive she will do well in her final Grade 12 examinations.
