UPDATE: Mpumalanga police arrest three for fatal shooting in KaMaqhekeza

One person died while another was hospitalised following a shooting on Thursday October 10.

The Mpumalanga police arrested three suspects, aged between 25 and 44, on Friday October 11 in connection with a fatal shooting incident that took place in KaMaqhekeza.

The police also confiscated three firearms during the arrest.

Two people were shot, resulting in one being killed and the another hospitalised, following the incident on Thursday October 10.

An incident had broken out between taxi drivers affiliated to the Lebombo Taxi Association and local transport operators earlier on Thursday. Allegedly, some taxi drivers brought in a security company to disrupt a meeting among local operators. This then resulted in members of the security company shooting at the local operators.

According to the Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, the suspects are facing charges of attempted murder as well as murder.

They are expected to appear in the Nkomazi Magistrate’s Court in Tonga on Monday, October 14.

“Police continue to maintain high visibility in the area while conducting a thorough assessment of the situation in order to increase resources if need be.

This follows the tragic shooting as conflicts erupted among certain groups in the Nkomazi area near Komatipoort.”

Mdhluli said the firearms that were confiscated will undergo ballistic testing to determine whether they were previously used in the commission of crimes.

“The police cannot rule out the possibility of adding more charges against the suspects as the investigation continues.”
